Afro-Caribbean Music and Dance
After School Matters Foundation
Collins High School
2005 - 2007

Two years of ten week apprenticeship programming for teens, co-taught with Charly Barbera. We met three days a week for three hours a day. We explored the cultural context and musical structures of Afro-Cuban Iyessa and Afro-Puerto Rican bomba, building performance skills and critical response skills. Apprentices also created original musical compositions based on Aro-Caribbean folkloric tales. We worked with conga, djembe, dun dun, shekere, bell, movement and vocals. Extra focus was placed on dancer-drummer communication and polyrhythm. The program culminated in a CD recording and a public performance. Recording and engineering by Weldon Anderson.
